Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 is a skateboarding video game released in 2000, developed by Neversoft for the PlayStation, Vicarious Visions for the Game Boy Advance, and Natsume for the Game Boy Color. Published by Activision, it is the second entry in the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series and debuted on PlayStation in 2000. The game was later ported to Windows and Dreamcast, with a separate version for Game Boy Color. In 2001, it was made available on platforms like Mac OS, Mac OS X, Nintendo 64, and Xbox (as part of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2x), with an additional Game Boy Advance version. The game was also released on Windows Mobile and Windows Phone in 2006, followed by an iPhone version in 2010.
Building on the game engine from its predecessor, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 enhanced graphics and gameplay, most notably with the inclusion of manuals (a feature that allows for chaining tricks) and cash rewards. Set in a 3D urban environment filled with punk rock and hip-hop music, players control various skateboarders to perform tricks or collect specific items. The game offers multiple modes, including career mode where players complete objectives and improve their character’s stats using earned money, free-play mode for unstructured skating, multiplayer mode with competitive games, and a level editor for creating custom stages.
Upon release, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 received widespread acclaim and is regarded as one of the best video games of all time, as well as the highest-rated sports game. Critics praised all versions for their addictive gameplay, expansive environments, stunning graphics, smooth controls, extensive customization options, and stellar soundtrack. Some minor criticisms were made about the lack of a first-person camera and the shortened soundtrack on the Nintendo 64 version. A sequel, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, was released in 2001.
