Wipeout 2097 (also known as Wipeout XL in North America and Japan) is a racing video game released in 1996, developed and published by Psygnosis for the PlayStation. It is the second game in the Wipeout series and a direct sequel to the original game, which launched the previous year. The game was later ported to Microsoft Windows and the Sega Saturn in 1997, followed by releases for Amiga and Macintosh.

Set several decades after the original game, Wipeout 2097 takes place in the year 2097 and introduces players to the faster, more competitive, and more perilous F5000 anti-gravity racing league, replacing the F3600 league from the first game. The sequel brought new gameplay elements, including a revamped damage system, new weapons, and fresh racing tracks. The Sega Saturn version allowed for analog control through its 3D Control Pad, while the PlayStation version supported analog control only with the optional NeGcon twist controller.

Upon its release, Wipeout 2097 received widespread acclaim, with critics praising its improved controls, graphics, and overall gameplay compared to the original. The game also featured a licensed electronic soundtrack with music from well-known artists like The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy, marking an early example of using modern licensed music in video games. Both Wipeout 2097 and its predecessor have since been featured on numerous “greatest games of all time” lists by various publications.
